The best way for southwest New Mexico residents to get to know the competitors and meet Olympians, National Champions, and World Record-Holders—often before they earn those titles—is to host them during Tour of the Gila.

For the 39th year, people who race road bikes are traveling to Silver City from other countries and across the U.S. One little-known fact is that it’s on Tour of the Gila to house those competing in the UCI men’s and women’s races. Plus, as the nation’s only UCI-sanctioned road bicycling stage race, Tour of the Gila often covers travel expenses for the people competing in the UCI races.

Grant County residents ease the burden by housing top endurance athletes while they race. Many become fans of the team they host and turn out to cheer on the riders. Others say the athletes become role models for their children. Some develop lasting relationships and invite the same team or rider back into their home over consecutive years.

This year’s race dates are April 29-May 3, 2026, and athletes often need housing during this stretch plus a day earlier and/or later.

The race happily accepts offers of RVs, pull-out couches, single guest bedrooms, multiple guest bedrooms, studio apartments, whole houses, vacation rentals, and even spaces not normally used for residential purposes but have room for air mattresses along with bathroom facilities.
